Memorization Methods

The first thing I do is edit the Bible memory verses so each phrase is on its own line.

(E.g. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

Now appears as

"In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God;

all things were made through him,

and without him

was not anything made that was made.

In him was life,

and the life was the light of men.

The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it. "

For the longest time, I used the form of practice that revealed one word or phrase at a time. Now my preferred practice is TYPING.

When I practiced by revealing one line at a time, I often made mini substitutions..... and, in general, if I did not think my substitutions altered the meaning, I did not push for exact memorization.

TYPING does not allow for variations, which has advantages & disadvantages. It takes a little longer to memorize & trying to remember when to use "and" or "but" (as well as other prepositions) can be perplexing....and yet I prefer it.

I believe you are free to choose which strategy fits your personality & goals better. Don't you love how flexible this app is?

Reviewing Process Example

Oct 1: New Verse (a Prayer) committed, assigns as "Due", "Level 0", Date "Today". Practice done, but cannot recite Prayer.

(Note: overnight "today" will change to "yesterday", still marking the last day this verse had recorded activity)

Oct 2: Prayer still is "Due", "Level 0", with Date "Yesterday". Practice NOT done, and cannot recite Prayer.

Oct 3: Prayer still is "Due", "Level 0", now with Date of "2 days ago". Practice still NOT done, still cannot recite Prayer.

Oct 4: Prayer still is "Due", "Level 0", with date "3 days ago". Practice IS done, but still cannot recite Prayer. Record my practice with an <X>, Date updates to "today".

Oct 5: Prayer still is "Due", "Level 0", with date "yesterday". Practice IS done, but still cannot recite Prayer. Record my practice with an <X>, Date updates to "today".

Oct 6: Prayer still is "Due", "Level 0", with date "yesterday". Practice IS done, and I can (finally!) recite Prayer. Record my practice with a <Check>. Verse updates to "Known", "Level 1", Date "tomorrow"(the date when it will next appear for review in "Due").

Oct 7: Prayer is back as "Due", stays "Level 1", with date "today". Practice IS done, and I can (again!) recite Prayer. Record my practice with a <Check>. Verse updates to "Known", "Level 2", Date "in 2 days".

Oct 9: Prayer is back as "Due", "Level 2", with date "today". Practice IS done, and I canNOT recite Prayer [ :( ]. Record my practice with an <X>. Verse updates to "Due", "Level 0", Date "today".

I find the dating very helpful.

When working on multiple "Due" verses, the ones you have done earlier in the day will be marked as "today", (instead of "5 days ago", etc).

Also, dates will draw your attention to verses you have been ignoring (i.e. the last time you practiced them may be MANY days ago). This build up can be a cue to give the verse renewed attention or reassign it to "New", (i.e. save it for a later date).

Since the "Known" tab's dates are counting down to when the verse will be back as "Due", (i.e. tomorrow, 2 days, 8 days, or other), I use it as a "peek ahead", to see how many verses will be assigned as "Due" the next & coming days.
